US stocks begin trading lower due to slowing recovery in the labor market
The main US stock indices fell at the beginning of trading today after data showed an increase in the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits last week for the first time in about four months, which indicates a faltering in the labor market recovery.
According to Reuters, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 49.87 points, or 0.18 percent, to open at 26,955.97 points. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 4.38 points, or 0.13 percent, to record 3,271.64 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 16.62 points, or 0.16 percent, to 10689.50 points.
